Gentle Criticism Stamp by Mirz123 Gentle Criticism Stamp by Mirz123
This stamp was inspired by two separate incidents recently.

The first was my visiting a page where the artist displayed a sign that warned people NOT to give him criticism. He explained he had gotten too many "critiques" which were nothing more than people ripping him to shred and he was sick of it.

Second, I myself, had a poster who decided to get all over my case because he felt (much of) my art was archaic and pointless. Pixel art should have died back in the 90s, y'know.

I think that unless someone specifically asks for an ass-chewing, that critique should be thoughtful...and gentle. People want to get better. They don't want to be so belittled they never want to create again.

This is in stamp form, but I DO have a PLZ version I'll be uploading very soon, since I know this stamp will do well in the artist notes of deviations. I just need to get the accounts set-up and I'll be linking it up soon.

In the past, a little bit over a year ago, I was actually getting critiques, but they weren't helping me all that much with how harsh they were. I drew my pupils huge on my art. I always saw big eyes and pupils as adorable, and that became a personal style. In the comments of one, I got a "Those pupils are fucking huge. It looks weird. You need to change that" and other harsh comments about the pupils, and honestly, it didn't help me improve at all. I stopped making pupils that big so I wouldn't worry about more comments like that happening. A simple "Those pupils are a bit too big" would have worked and probably would have gotten me changing those to make my art look better, not like the others, where I was in fear that if I don't, I'd get yelled at again. Art is something I use to relax. I tend to be a bit sensitive over everything, but especially my art. It doesn't take super harsh comments to get me to realize something doesn't look right. I don't need the super harsh comments like I was getting.

A lot of times it seems like these kinds of people just look to kill peoples inspiration or hurt them.

I wish there was a stamp that said "I don't need gentle criticism. Tell me like it is. I like it rough." Because while I respect others' feelings, I enjoy others being direct to me if it helps me improve.

I got some critiques that were quite harsh in my opinion, when I really wanted to know if the headshot/icon that I made was pretty good ;;

AMEN!

Course, it might take me a while to accept constructive criticism due to my sensitive side (growing up, I was never given constructive criticism like how I get on Fanfiction.net), I still accept good criticism that will help me.

One time in one popular story of mine, there was a guy who gave me reviews on each and every chapter, and the first one on the first chapter? He said it's rushed (which is true) but then said it's awful.

Going on, he let out a *sigh* while giving me some criticism.

Then he questioned the romance (which I do admit is kinda strange, but hey, Fire Emblem Awakening DO have some strange ways for characters to fall in love with each other) and then saying "da frig?"

He even tried to inform me that my OTP that I added in the story that they're from different timelines, which I know, but still...

That upsets me that time. I mean, while he DOES give some half decent points, the things he did above is just rude. :/

Love this stamp BTW. FAVING IT SO HARD (if you know what I mean :eyes:)

That's awful. I agree, someone can not like something and still be respectful about it. Really sad when people feel the need to be rude.

I'm sure it's justified, but I wouldn't post comments like that.
The staff really don't like it when people do 'call-outs' for any user.

I've gotten harsh and rude criticism before (on my writing), and it really is demoralizing.

i wish i couldn't even get a small critique, because i want to at least improve on my drawings :( , but the gentle criticsm is that i agree (trust me i experienced that issue in middle school due to a person that draws good but is a complete jerk to others that try to draw and discourages to the point that they gave drawing completely).
either way this stamps makes a good point

One way to help get feedback is if someone posts, "nice job" on your piece, write back and say, "thank you. What did you like about it? Do you think anything can be changed?"  Sometimes that will prompt conversation.

One time on my old account someone pointed out every single flaw on a piece it took me a few days to complete. They said it sucked, and that i should take it down and leave dA for having such bad art. They even wrote a journal about me.
DA isn't all about good art.

I hate it when people harshly criticise my work and classify it as 'only their opinion'. It's no excuse whatsoever if they're going to be a jerk about their so-called opinion. They would mostly point out the flaws about it, and never tell me what I can do to fix it. It totally kills it, and one time I stopped drawing a particular thing that I liked drawing for a few weeks because of one jerk....It sucks.
When a person gives out a critique, it should be gentle and helpful, and not the kind that'd kill inspiration...

Well, I think it needs to be balanced.  Hearing what you are doing wrong isn't easy. But if you don't know what you are doing right, that's no good either.

I got mostly flames and demeaning critiques. Not to mention people took the "I'm just offering critique/saying my opinion" as excuse to give me tasteless and useless comments that only kills my inspiration. As a result I never ask for critique because for me, is giving green light to demeaning comments. Bad experience, what can I say?

And I loathe people who go around pointing only bad things about artworks and not even giving a bloody suggestion for fixing the mistakes. I even had a watcher who never commented... except for saying bad things about my arts. It really sucked.

The few gentle critiques I've got are from friends, close watchers and my beta artist.  However, I do agree that even the gentlest critique will hurt. It happened to me sometimes, but I just got over it and tried doing better next time.

So, good stamp! Nod

Yes. I wish some of my watchers would see this and think. Because I get REALLY pissed off if someone rips me to shreds about my art. I know I shouldn't, but it's an emotion my mind barely has control of. =P

On one of my old accounts so many people harshly critiqued me and said "what is this? a piece of blob I'm looking at?" and " get off and come back when you're better" and also "why does the cat have a huge head? gtfo!" and I'm just sitting her like " :c ..." especially since 20 more people came over and started bashing me for having a hard time with being critiqued, since someone kind enough told me to fix the fur but at the time I wasn't very good at cooperating with being critiqued I literally freaked out and got mad.. especially since it was kind... No I'm not schizophrenic but that's what happened. So many people came over and bashed me calling me names... It really hurts y'know? they especially began to consider me a troll who was over obsessed with wolves and anthro's beginning to call me a "furfag" and.. yeah... sorry for the long comment.. ^^;

No, it's okay. I agree, hateful critique (that's the best way to call it) is terrible. It doesn't help the person, just discourages them. I'm so sorry that happened to you.

Hi, I have a simple question, how can I post this beautiful stamp on the comments of a submission?
Reply
:iconmirz123:

You can't as dA doesn't allow deviations in comments (yet). It is coming but is not here.

As an alternative, you can request that a group make a PLZ stamp of the piece. #PlzCatalog will do that if you request. You can tell them that I have given permission for you to do so. C:

A critique should always be objective- a** kissing is not helpful at all.
But it should be never harsh.
(Unless the artist demands it)
