Hobby - Making Emotes by Mirz123 Hobby - Making Emotes by Mirz123
This was supposed to be my entry for the April EMTC. The theme was hobbies. Of course, at this point in my life, making emotes is by far my biggest and most regular hobby.

I came up with this idea weeks ago, but ended up with a horrible case of strep throat and couldn't pixel much. I spent the last few days working like mad to get it done in time to submit. Alas, at the last moment, ^krissi001 entered with the same theme. Even though her emote is pretty different, the core idea was the same--an emote creating an emote on a computer in real time. I didn't want to look like a copy-cat (though we both independently got the idea), and I didn't want to look like I was trying to steal her thunder (though I doubt I could have as her entry is 1000 times more epic than mine), so I decided to bow out. Instead, I hurried and made my typing/writer emote. [link]

So, here it is as a stand-alone piece. This probably took me upwards of 10 hours to do. It's 202 frames. Synching the mouse movements with the screen movement probably took me triple the time it took me to do the screen animation. Oh, and getting the frame rates down, too, was a PITA. I used a lot of the tricks I learned making my Fella Newscast piece. [link]

I know it's a bit long, but it really does show (mostly) my process for making emotes and animating them, as I generally do each cell separately. Plus, I think it's fun to watch. I really didn't expect to win with this, anyway, as there are way better entries in the contest than this.

It was kinda funny. As I was working on this, I really had this weird deja vu feeling, kinda like being in an Escher painting. :giggle:

:bulletgreen: Credit for giant emote base goes to =Wooded-Wolf

*** :aww: As with most of my smileys, you may use this on and off dA, without my permission. The only thing I ask is that you keep the file name in tact and don't remove any credit information. If you do use it for something, it would be nice if you could comment and let me know. It encourages me to make more smileys if I know people are using/enjoying them.

Please note, this piece is NOT available for commercial use.***

Oh wow. This is really impressive. I love all the details you put in. :) The program on the screen is easily recognizable as an image editor.
I don't even want to think about the syncing of the mouse, I know I would have given up in frustration. =P

You know, I started to do it the stupid way, then switched to a more mathematical way of doing it (which I was avoiding since I hate maths), and it ended up working pretty well and was much easier.

If you have the time, and energy, could you elaborate a bit? If not it's cool! :)
Also, while I'm replying to you here I want to wish you a Happy Birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day. :)

Well, I was just trying to eyeball it and pixelling it by hand. It looked horrible and inconsistent. Then I started counting out each segment--how many frames there were. Then I would figure adapt the movement, figuring out how I could adjust the movement to work within that number. So, where typically it might take me 8 moves to do a circular movement regularly, if one segment only gave me 6 frames, I would adjust accordingly. I don't know if that makes sense, but it was different than I normally do things.

LOL! Yeah, it was pretty surreal doing it. Kinda like those paintings showing a guy looking into the computer and there is a guy looking into a computer on his screen, and so-on, and so-on.

Next week. I never do anything special. I used to really hate my birthday and got mad if people celebrated it. Now I'm just kinda neutral. I don't really mind getting older, but always feel guilty when people make a big fuss over me.

I don't think it's too long, actually I think it's fascinating to watch, and can even double as a tutorial 0.o

And there's that meta-moment when the emote faces his creator ...

And I think it's cool that you bowed out. Sometimes I meet someone that's different from the others. Like that guy who let me go first in line at McDonalds ...

I'm sure there's lots of good karma coming your way.
