Lost at Sea by Mirz123 Lost at Sea by Mirz123
My entry for the Emoticon Opus Contest. Theme: Static Impact ---> [link]

When thinking about what I could do for this contest, my mind went back to an idea from about 6 months ago. When *Ravenswd was working on his entry for the February ETMC, he and I had toyed around with doing an emote lost at sea. He instead went with his Escape Pod theme (essentially a lost in space theme). [link] I made up my mind that I would eventually do the lost at sea idea.

I'm sure this could work as an animated piece, but I do think it's quite dramatic as a static. I tried so many different things with the water before finally settling on this technique. Some of you will see that I fell back upon my tried and true method of sky pixelling. While I tend to use those sunrise/sunset colors a bit, for this piece it was really necessary to set-off all of the blue. Though, I did use a slightly different dither technique this time.

Once I got the technique for the sea, the piece didn't take that long. About a half an hour overall.

*** :aww: As with most of my smileys, you may use this on and off dA, without my permission. The only thing I ask is that you keep the file name in tact and don't remove any credit information. If you do use it for something, it would be nice if you could comment and let me know. It encourages me to make more smileys if I know people are using/enjoying them.

Please note, this piece is NOT available for commercial use.***

Aww, thank you. It's one of my favorite pieces, but not many people look at it.

You're very welcome. I like it a lot.

BTW, I'm learning what to appreciate in pixel work from reading your features. Thanks for expanding my knowledge.

Oh, that's so nice to hear. Pixel-art is really underappreciated. There are many technical things that make a piece stand-out. I'm glad that I can help you discover those.

Well... I screwed something up big-time! I was trying to preview something to see if it worked and I guess I sent it instead. ANYWAY... you've used the "Have a nice day" emote and I think that one is so cool! I use the "welcome" sign a lot. I also use the "multi fav" one too. Oh, I won't even try to remember them all. I'll just say, "Keep pixeling!" :D

I like learning about the technical things, because that gives me a greater appreciation of the art.

Anj

I have to admit that technology has certainly greatly impacted art and how we enjoy it.

*chuckle* that wasn't quite what I meant. I use "technical" differently than most people due to the kind of work I do. When I said I like learning about the technical aspects of things, I mean about the nitty gritty... like how you pointed out the pixeling in a background of one emoticon or smilie, or the change of colors in a small area. To me that's being "technical". Maybe I should say "detail oriented"? :D Who knows? Not me!

YEah, I did think that was what you meant, but I was still thinking on the other. LOL!
