It is widely known that many famous artists, composer, and authors have had the frustration of having a work they felt was sub-par gain huge popularity while pieces they worked harder on and adore sat un-noticed. This is the same for everyday deviants. I recently ran a poll asking for deviants to share with me their thoughts on this and share their own art. Here are some of the answers--the first piece being the most faved and the second being the one they wished had more love. More will be featured in future articles. To see the original poll (which is still open), click here.
Memories Like the shards of a broken mirror they surround her, the memories of both of her lives. One is warm and inviting, the other cold and forbidding. Enigma-37 shudders as she touches the closest shard, it shatters into a cloud of silver revealing the scene within.
She never wanted to be here, never wanted any of this, yet here she is. She looks at the soldier to her left: it's Danielle, she is saying the Lords prayer before they drop in Germany, the place where she was born and raised.
"It'll be over soon," 37 says placing a comforting hand on her friend's shoulder attempting to soothe her guilty conscience. Danielle looks
The SleeperIt was strange.
Surreal, she realized, as she turned the repetitive thoughts of earlier over again in her mind.
How normal everything seemed in light of what was about to come.
Her candle was burning low. Even the longer one she'd requested of the bar maid and paid the excess coin for didn't seem long enough.
But then, she told herself ruefully, the candlemaker couldn't have likely made one long enough to be suitable, even if he labored a century's worth of days and nights over it. She watched beads of wax slide down the sides to pool in the middle of the wooden tabletop, the smell of charring wick ripe in her nose.
If, she then reminded
And adding my own, because I can...
In this series, I hope to introduce the community to some artists who have been around dA for a while. Some are known, some are still relativity unknown. The interviews are meant to be short and sweet. I encourage you to check out the artist's full gallery and add them to your devWatch.
-- This issue, we talk to digital artist, ^FionaCreates
Could you introduce yourself and tell us a little about yourself and your dA life? (You can use this question to plug any groups or off-dA projects you may have.)
Good Evening people of the Internet.
What can I say other than Hi my name is Fiona, AKA ^FionaCreates, I'm 24, spend most of my time being creative in some manor or other and, according to some, I'm quintessentially British. As part of deviantART I used to be the GD/GM/CV for the Digital Dolls Category and I'm still fairly active in that category, I currently co run a dolls contest group entitled #minishizzle hosting 2 small contests a month. I also write and illustrate the dieselpunk webcomic Hairpin which is fairly new and still finding it's feet. Comics is a new endeavor for me, and certainly very challenging but rewarding.
I'm also a huge fan of the quiz show "pointless" and watch it most days. I have quite extensive General Knowledge and get pissed off when I can't answer a question. Not particularly art related but yay quizshows!
What would you say your main artform is? Secondary?
I'm a figurative illustrator. Whether this emerges as illustrations, digital dolls, paintings or comics is unique to the intention of each idea. I work in both digital and traditional and often fuse the two. I don't really have a favourite media to work with beyond "whatever gets the job done". Digital and Traditional... they're just the tool, the Artist makes the Art.
When did you start pursuing your art? What prompted you to?
I've never considered pursuing anything else. I've been told that when I was in playschool at around 3 years old I used to demand crayon time everyday, even though crayon time was only 1 day a week. Never say no to crayons.
What is your favorite piece in your gallery at the moment?
In general, what is your favorite thing to create (i.e. fan-art, poetry, etc) ?
My favourite thing to make is really boring run of the mill character portraits or tool dolls because I can relax and feel good about my work. There's things like full illustrations or pages of my comic that are much more difficult and require work and concentration, which I also love and are immensely satisfying, but sometimes it's fun just to kick back and do easy.
Just for fun question: What is your favorite movie?
Of All Time? The Oceans 11 with Brad Pitt and George Clooney. It never fails to make me smile, the chemistry between the 11 is fantastic. Is it the best movie ever? No. But it just makes me smile so great for bad days. I can never not watch it.
Time to spread the love. Who are 3 artists you feel could use more love? Tell us why you love them. (please select one piece from each of the artist's gallery and send me the thumb)
*teaganwhite - Everything from Cartoon to Realism done with intense care and delicacy but, above all, heart.
*CumbriaCam - Because there's nothing that gets my heart going like excellent Landscapes.
~Glumentia - Groovy colours and pixels and dolls. What's not to love?
“Man is not made for defeat” -Ernest Hemingway
Some of my picks from ^FionaCreates's gallery:
November is known for Thanksgiving to my U.S. citizens, but it is also known for Movember, a movement that helps bring awareness to men's health issues. As my brother-in-law is a survivor of prostate cancer, this is an issue that is important to our family. You can read more about the effort here. A symbol of Movember is the mustache. With that in mind, here's a lovely collection of some awesome staches.
This section will be used to promote special events and such around dA that are close to my heart, as well as requested pimpage.
